The Principles of “Wabi-sabi” (1)

Wabi-sabi” ; It nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect.” ~ Richard Powell

I have heard this term before. Referring to the filling of cracks in Japanese pottery with gold. To show that even imperfections can hold beauty and a story within. I have also recently come to the realization of how this fits with damned near every religion, philosophical school of thought and even business sectors have had to grasp this concept. In order to realize that were it not for the imperfections and the fixing of the problems that caused those imperfections are the very reasons we have these faiths, schools and jobs in the 1st place.

Is it not imperfection that drives us to, “Be better”? Or to leave things better for the next generations through religion, philosophy, economy, environment and so on? Of course we want these things. We would not be human if we didn’t. We need to turn this concept of Wabi-sabi inward and take a true inventory of ourselves. Find the cracks, fill them with proverbial gold (i.e best practices) and realize the beauty within each one of us. That is the only way we move forward as individuals, congregation, sangha, stoa…all the way to whatever workforce we are a part of.

So, whatever path you follow or are working towards. Find the cracks. Fill them to the best of your ability and we’ll all be better for it. But as mentioned…you have to start with YOU. If you are not standing with your feet firmly on the path your forging. How can you truly help outside yourself. This was also a concept that permeated MANY religions and schools of thought…

“You can’t pour from an empty cup”

P.S. We will return to this subject in the future. Hence (1)
